The world is now in the process of another transition from the old world order to the new one, and Ukraine is one of the most tragic and dangerous “live laboratories”. Ukraine is now a battlefield for the Architecture of social relations of the Future.
One of the properties of the lace of our DNA is the Ukrainian Rhizome, a phenomenon of our society that gives it the ability to instantly self-organize and create an effective structure without a center. This determines the algorithms of its development and activity.

The initiative is being coordinated by the Foundation of Ukrainian architectural chamber (UUA Foundation) and the Design4Ukraine Association, with the backing of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine and Roberto Bianconi. The Cultural Association Scuola Permanente dell'Abitare has significantly contributed to the project, and the Italian architectural community has provided unwavering support.

THE IDEA

Every day we resist and fight for the territory and the freedom to be ourselves, have our own voice and the Future we dream about.

What can Ukrainians share with the people of the world during this unique moment in time?

We wish to share with the people of the world the state TO BE, the moment HERE and NOW and one of the properties of the lace of our DNA - the Ukrainian Rhizome.

It determined the algorithms of our historical development and activities.

This phenomenon of our society gives us the ability to instantly self-organize and create an effective structure without a center, giving us a permanent sense of the value of Freedom.

Our collective memory is filled with the events of resisting colonialism and fighting to preserve our identity. Ukrainians are connected to their ancestors and future generations through the thin roots of timeless self-awareness. The culture of care and personal responsibility, the memory of generations, the deep connection with the native land, the collective strength and consciousness, the willingness to defend our values, and the ability to instantly self-organize are the properties of our DNA lacework.

We consider that the strategy for reconstructing Ukraine and its architecture ought to be complex. It must be centered around our culture and identity, and at the same time, it should provide the vision of the future with a human-centered approach and sensitivity to the context.

We are convinced that such principles can contribute a significant spirit of change to the architecture of social relations and the Architecture of the Future.

The project aims to establish the pan-European genesis of Ukraine, which has always been a part of the European community, with values laid down in previous centuries.

The journey is like a book in “twelve volumes”, in the content of which European viewers will discover even more dimensions of their history, and Ukrainians will find answers about the components of their own identity. The study of the architectural complex of St. Sofia of Kyiv, its history, connections and testimonies will be the starting point of this journey.

The occupiers systematically, mercilessly and purposefully destroy historical, cultural and architectural monuments. That is why the project conveys the true history of Ukraine through architectural and historical parallels.

The architecture preserved on the territory of Ukraine eloquently testifies to the birth of its statehood and culture from Kyivan Rus time. It also witnessed the largest theft in history by the Russian aggressor empire.

The moment and the process are of great importance. We are creating this project in a time of war, simultaneously in different parts of the world, united by the enthusiasm and resources of a self-motivated team of people without sponsors or funds, relying on each other's support. This project is proof that Ukrainians know how to build networks and succeed. Network leadership is our unique Ukrainian superpower!

We want the world to hear the voice of Ukrainian architects. We speak, and we have something to say.

We want the world to hear the voice of Ukrainian architects. We speak, and we have something to say.

Our voice draws strength from the past, relies on it as its roots and speaks to the world about the new challenges we are facing now, and the challenges of the future we foresee.

We face these challenges boldly and directly.

Glory to Ukraine!

“In fact, now is the time when we must simultaneously imagine the Future, fight for it and implement the vision.

We imagine a world of ecological relationships built on timeless human values and rights. They shall be built on freedom in integrity at all levels - physical, mental, psychological and spiritual, and on identity codes. We need to preserve, explore and develop them.

These tasks are urgent for each country, for each nation. Time is crucial. And international professional platforms help to create effective dialogue and exchange between the performers.”

Anastasiia Biletska
Curator of the Ukrainian DNA - DNA UCRAINO project

“Italy and Italians are helping Ukraine a lot in this difficult period. But at the same time, there are many problems related to the false narratives of russian propaganda about Ukraine.

Unfortunately, what I have observed over the past year is that despite all the efforts of Ukrainian diplomacy, the history of Ukraine is still perceived by some Italians through the prism of russian propaganda policy. There is a lot of distortion and false information about the situation in Ukraine, not to mention its history.”

Anna Manako
Curator of the Ukrainian DNA - DNA UCRAINO project

“The voice of Ukrainian architects should be heard in the world. And the world must listen to it.

Right now, it is critically important, during the war, during the Venice Biennale, the most prestigious architectural exhibition.

It is our architectural front in every sense. It is a struggle for our past, present and future. For our identity. The identity of our cities, architecture, and Ukrainians.

We cannot surrender this front, and we are acting!”

Anna Kyrii
Curator of the Ukrainian DNA - DNA UCRAINO project

“During my work as a researcher at Kyiv's National Conservation Area, I focused on the proportional structure and architectural planning of St. Sophia Cathedral. Meanwhile, in my doctoral studies, I also investigated the traditional sacred architecture of the 17th and 19th centuries.

I discovered a common construction principle, a creative code of masters that underpinned the construction of churches throughout Ukraine. It is also exciting to note that it corresponds with some regularities in the planning structure of Byzantine churches.”

Olga Neshta
Curator of the Ukrainian DNA - DNA UCRAINO project

When I wrote the first text of the project and proposed it to Ukrainian friends, I referred to my meeting with a modern Kobzar in Kyiv in the 2000s, and the thing started from there to then arrive at the name of the UCRAiNO DNA project and its current content.

As I hope you know, the Kobzars were storytellers of which even the great poet Taras Shevchenko wrote a beautiful book, who were exterminated by Stalin precisely to destroy the memory of the tradition of the various territories of Ukraine.

The Team with which we carried out the project in Venice did a great deal of research aimed precisely at recovering the identity, and then, we all hope as soon as possible, to start a long work of reconstruction of the country soon.”
